With the anticipated release of the new official sequel to Gone with the Wind, titled, “creatively,” Rhett Butler’s People, there seems to be a fever of GWTW amongst my GWTW loving acquaintances. AWESOME! There had been a lull for a while. I do hope it’s better than Scarlett. I liked it okay at the time I read it…6 years ago, but there just wasn’t enough Rhett. let’s face it, he’s my favorite character in that story, where was he the whole time? So many things happened that i just didn’t think Margaret Mitchell would have written. And so, I’m greatly looking forward to hearing Rhett’s side of the story, and learning about his life. Because this isn’t fiction, haha. But seriously, I do hope it’s a winner! This is like Harry potter for me. November 6th! Whoot!

Second, what is this? Well, it’s the new cover for GWTW. I do not approve. It looks like some trashy romance novel. All it needs is Fabio and a white horse. I feel like this is some sort of insult to good literature. Romance it is, trashy it is NOT. And that lady on the cover looks like Claire Danes from a distance
No bueno. What happened to Clark and Viv? Or that white cover the hardback had? Get it together, Random House.

How does everyone else feel about these two things?

This is bigger and better than Harry Potter
Well, you know my side of the story on both things. Where was Mr. Rhett Butler in “Scarlett”? He only made a few appearances throughout the book, and I found myself searching for the word “Rhett” on every page, heh. So, I am STOKED, to put it lightly
and, what IS this new cover? I dont need a new one, thanks. and who is this person on there? Hmmm.

oh, i know!
A sequel w/out Rhett is just not a sequel to me.
I liked the old trashy romance cover. i don’t need this new one!

I do not like sequels when they are written by other authors. Who remembers Alexander Ripley’s “Scarlett” anyway? Can some-one please tell me who Alexander Ripley is/was to warrant allowance to write a sequel to GWTW? This new book will be the same too. GWTW was Margaret Mitchell’s life/passion/baby and it should belong to her only. I feel all these sequels are just trying to cash in on the fact GWTW left it’s readers wanting to know what was Scarlett’s tomorrow and “feeling” for poor Rhett…..Mitchell’s whole intention… leave it at that.
As for the cover….she looks like Scarlett Johansson alright!!!! What an insult. Vivien was Scarlett and always will be. Bring back the cover with Viv running down the path of Tara in her billowing white dress.
Pat Conroy wrote “Prince of Tides”- a beautiful read for those interested- but he has nothing to do with GWTW.

Oh my. The new GWTW cover is horrible. Is that supposed to be Scarlett? It’s one thing to not use Viv but another entirely to use an illustration that looks nothing at all like the description of Margaret Mitchell’s character. Yuck.

Hi;
I agree with all I have read, being a fan since the age of 12 in the 60’s, I did not appreciate the sequel either. A. Ripley got the chance because she agreed to all the restrictions set by the Mitchell’s trust who owns the rights. They pretty much told her what she could and could not write. Most writers would not have agreed to that. What are your thoughts?

Katie–I have no idea who pat conroy is! Hopefully he’s intelligent!
tati–Scarlett Johanson shouldn’t be anywhere near my favorite book.
Shiroma–Ripley’s Scarlett, i read it, i needed to know if they got back together at the end. Then i was pissed because I waited 800 pages for it then it was over. BOOOOOOO.
Julia–No joke, I totally agree, that cover is stupid.
Debra–I thought overall, despite the restrictions, Ripley wasn’t as good of a writer as Mitchell was. I definitely didn’t like Scarlett much.
