Actually, it was unveiled about a month and a half ago, BUT, vivandlarry.com visitor and awesome girl, Mariana, from London, went out to take photos last week! The statue shows Larry as Hamlet from his 1947 Oscar winning film, and it is located jut outside his National Theatre on the South Bank, not far from Waterloo Bridge. It was commissioned by Larry’s son, Tarquin, sculpted by Angela Connor, and unveiled for the thespian’s centeniary this year.

I am so happy and proud that there is now a huge statue honoring Larry and I happen to really like Tarquin so I’m happy that he was able to see his goal realized but um… what is up with the texture of his face? It looks as if he played Hamlet as an 80 year old man with pockmarks. I wouldn’t gripe about something so inane if it weren’t for the legs… look at his legs… they’re smooth. Why isn’t his face? And I kind of almost have to agree with whichever English magazine columnist it was who said “It looks more to me like Laurence Olivier as Peter Pan than as Hamlet.” I don’t know which role or visage of Larry’s I would rather it be, I guess Hamlet’s a good one, I’m just really not feeling the look of this statue. Okay, I feel awful now.

HAHA agreed! maybe the sculptor lost her tools and ran out of money when she got to his face. I’d rather is be Larry as Heathcliff or, umm…just Larry…circa1940!
