House Where Laurence Olivier Proposed to Vivien Leigh Now Up for Sale

According to the Daily Mail, the house where Laurence Olivier proposed to Vivien Leigh is up for sale.  The Sheephouse in Brede, East Sussex, belonged to the Oliviers’ old friend, Oswald Frewen, who was like a big brother to Vivien.  It is now owned by Frewen’s nephew, Jonathan and his soon-to-be ex-wife, Anita.  The price is a hefty 1.5 million pounds (about $3 million), but it is rich in history.

Olivier actually proposed to Vivien at The Sheephouse. In 1945, when the scandal had dimmed Oswald married Lena Spilman.‘Lena told me that Larry had proposed to Vivien while sitting on the sofa in the drawing room.’

The room where Olivier proposed to Vivien. ^^

How fascinating! Somehow I always thought he actually proposed to her when she was doing GWTW. Now I’m curious to know exactly when this proposal happened. Any ideas?

  1. I wouldn’t be completely against having a joint homestead here with you as long as there’s room for my cow, garden, and knitting instructor Tati. Let’s look into it.

  2. It looks like that place has enough room for two cows and a garden. maybe some sheep so you can knit sweaters. i’ll take the library for my massive movie book/larry/viv collection, and i’d like an entire wing of the place for me and my suitors.

  3. hmm… but where will I store my Aztec Tomb???
